In its peak (between AD 1050 and 1100), Cahokia was the largest pre-Columbian city center located north of Mesoamerica with an estimated population of over 10,000 people. This does not include the huge populace of outlying farmsteads and villages in the floodplain.
The massive settlement was situated in an ideal location near the confluence of Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois rivers. The city had platforms with ridgetops, conical mounds; residential and public spaces; an enormous sundial as well as an (now renovated) palisade/stockade that was situated around the central ceremonial area.
The mounds and terraces that looked like pyramids were built up almost entirely of several layers of clay and soil. To access the sanctuaries’ upper levels, they had ramps that were topped with log staircases.
