I. The southern region of the Appalachian Plateau, the Cumberland Plateau dominates East Tennessee, within this mountainous region are the major cities of East Tennessee: Knoxville, Chattanooga, and the Tri-Cities (Kingsport, Johnson City along with Bristol).

East Tennessee is almost entirely located in it’s Eastern Time Zone (see: US Time Zone Map) however the majority of the state follows Central Time.

II. Middle Tennessee lies to the west from the Cumberland Plateau; the region is characterized by rolling hills and fertile river valleys, as well as the capital city of the state, Nashville in addition to the largest metropolitan area in Tennessee which is Nashville Metropolitan Area. Tennessee has a shared UNESCO World Heritage Site with North Carolina.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a significant North American refuge of temperate zone fauna and flora that has survived the Pleistocene glaciers.
The park is spread over around 200,000 acres, located along the ridgeline of the Great Smoky Mountains, a subrange of the Appalachian Mountains.

This park houses the biggest remains of an Arcto-Tertiary Geoflora that once covered the Northern Hemisphere, and it offers a glimpse into exactly what the Pleistocene (Ice Age) plant life might have looked like prior to the recent impacts of humans.

The main entrance to the park in Tennessee is in Gatlinburg as well as the entrance to North Carolina at Cherokee.
